Gardeners are always looking for ways to fertilize their plants. Chemical fertilizers provide one option, but can leach chemicals into ground water and can have an unwanted adverse effect on your soil. Many gardeners are turning to natural fertilizers such as compost and manure to help keep their gardens healthy and thriving.
Remember, there is a way to create a liquid fertilizer for your plants. The best part of it is that the manufacturers of this fertilizer already live in your garden! This amazing fertilizer is called worm tea, and you can make it quite easily. One of the best ways to make worm tea is to get an old sink.
Place some window screen in the drain, and then suspend the sink over a bucket. Make sure you can close the drain from underneath. Once you have your sink set up, fill it with dirt on one side and compost waste on the other. Then add worms! Once your worms are working for you, it is time to start "brewing" your tea.
As the worms eat the compost and dirt, they leave what are called castings (we could call them our worm "teabag"). First add water to ensure that the castings are thoroughly moist, but not wet enough to drown the worms. Then you should open the drain and allow the tea to drain into the bucket. It may take a long time to gather a significant amount of tea, keep in mind that a little will go a long way.
To apply your tea, add four ounces of tea to about a gallon of water. For best effect you should apply this mixture every 30-60 days. Worm tea is a great fertilizer. Additionally, it contains microbes that prevent many fungi. The leftover castings in your sink can also be used as compost to enrich your soil. |
