Kitchen Gardens

The tradition of having a kitchen garden stretches back to the days when you were not able to head down the street to the grocery store each day.  In order to make sure there was enough to eat, most families had a small garden outside their kitchen with vegetables, spices, and even medicinal herbs.  What was once a necessity for family survival has now become one of the best ways to reduce your groceries and beautify your home.

The kitchen garden is once again in vogue, and many people are choosing to have a small garden close to their kitchen.  You can have a kitchen garden even if you do not have much space.  Some people have even planted windowsill boxes in apartment buildings.  When you are planning your kitchen garden you will want to choose a location that is easily accessible from your kitchen, and then decide what kind of bed you would like to have.

If you have the space, a raised bed makes a lovely addition to your yard.  You should surround your bed with a garden fence to keep unwanted children, pets, and others out of your garden.  Once you have picked a location for your kitchen garden, it is time to choose the types of vegetables and plants you want.  Carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and green onion are popular choices, which will require a minimum of effort.

To maximize space, you may want to grow plants such as snap peas, which will climb a trellis.  Caring for your kitchen garden should not be a chore.  In fact, gardening has been proven to reduce stress.  Keep an eye on your plants to prevent insects.  If you find any, you can pick them off by hand or spray them with a solution of water and dish washing soap.
