City Gardening

Many people in the suburbs or in rural areas enjoy gardening as a hobby.  Additionally, some people simply prefer the wonderful taste of fresh foods on the dinner table, therefore growing their favorite fruits and vegetables.  However, gardening is not just a way to beautify your yard or feed yourself but it has also been proven an extremely effective stress reducer.

Many people who live in the city may believe that gardening is out of their reach, but there are gardening options available even for people who live in apartments deep in the city core.  The first option for city gardening is to grow your flowers or vegetables in beds or pots at home.  This is a particularly good option if you have a patio or small yard, but if you do not you can use a planter, windowsill or planting box.

The biggest difficulty in gardening in the city is ensuring an adequate supply of sunlight, especially if you live on a block surrounded by apartment buildings.  However, direct sunlight is not always necessary.  In fact, many plants can thrive in an area with a high ambient light level.  If things are really dark around your home, you may want to consider using a sun lamp for a few hours each day.

Another option for gardeners who live in the city is community gardens or city farms.  These gardens are generally operated by volunteers, and you can rent a small patch to grow your garden.  Some community garden programs even include instruction courses so you can learn how to have a healthy and thriving garden.

Therefore, if you live in the city, do not think that you cannot take up gardening as a hobby or necessity of life.  While it may require a bit more creativity and imagination, city gardening can be a rewarding and stress reducing hobby for anyone!  You will be amazed at the variety of plants that will do amazingly well with a city garden!
