A very popular option for gardens is the creation of themes.  While you could plant some flowers to create color, with a theme garden, you will go well beyond a typical garden, having a unique place filled with magnificent color and interesting plant species.  The great thing about theme gardens is that they are fun to plan.

To get started, you need to include only plants in your garden that can thrive in the same type of soil and environment.  Do not think for a second that this will limit your options since you will have thousands of choices, regardless of the category in which you need to stay.  By choosing plants and flowers that will work well in the same growing environment, you will be assured of a thriving garden rather than one filled with some plants that do well while other plants die.

While you can create a theme garden using a huge selection of plants, keep in mind that you can actually create this type of garden with just one, two, or three different species.  For instance, if you wanted to have a cat themed garden, you could grow pussy willow and cattails, and then enhance the garden with various types of cat décor.

Another important aspect of a theme garden is that you can choose a family of plants, while still ending up with stunning color.  Take lilies for example.  You will find hundreds of species that come in all kinds of colors and color combinations.  Whether clustering specific varieties together or mingling them throughout the garden, this makes a beautiful presentation.

When creating a theme garden, while you want the main layout to consist of like plants and flowers, keep in mind that for fillers, they do not have to fit the theme exact.  In fact, fillers often add interest and breakup the consistent look of a theme garden, giving it a unique and appealing look.  To give you an idea of a few other theme gardens to consider, think about the following:

• Bible Theme Garden – With this garden, you can choose plant and flower species taken directly out of the Bible.  While you might need to look a little harder or order some of these plants off the Internet since they grow in other countries, with a little effort, you will have an amazing garden. A great addition to a Bible Theme Garden is to add a decorative garden statue of Saint Francis or one of your favorite Saints or perhaps a decorative stone as an accent.

• Romantic Theme Garden – In this case, you would choose flowers often associated with romance, to include the rose, bleeding heart, poppies, and so on. This would be a great place for a romantic fountain or a perhaps a sundial, garden statue or special work of Art like a bronze sculpture. Your romantic themed garden can continue to grow by adding an arbor or pergola for vines and flowers.

• Animal Theme Garden – This type of theme garden is fun to plan and grow, especially if you have children that would like to be involved.  In this case, choose plants with animal names and even shrubs that can be clipped in the shape of animals. This would be a great place to add a animal or dog statue as a focal point.  This type of garden is whimsical and makes a great conversation area.
• Oriental Garden – Add a touch of the Orient to your garden by adding a simple pagoda or Buddha among the flowers and scrubs.

The possibilities are limitless and by changing or adding decorative statues you can change the mood or theme of your garden.
