Many people are fascinated by the lush green colors and tough hide of the cactus.  Its ability to survive in the desert is legendary, but gardeners who are not located near a desert often wish they could have cacti in their own garden.  The truth is that cacti are adaptable to many different conditions, and it is possible to have a cactus garden almost anywhere.  With just a little effort to create the perfect accommodations you can have a garden that will feature some of nature's most exotic plants.

Not surprisingly, cacti like dry conditions, which means, you should plan your bed for a spot where there is adequate drainage; otherwise your cacti may "drown" or rot.  A slight hill is perfect for a cactus garden, but you can also use level land if you dig down at least 6-12 inches.  Once you have dug out a level patch for your cactus garden, line the bottom with plastic or landscaping cloth to prevent weed growth.

You can also build a rock or concrete wall around your garden to help keep your cactus soil in the right place.  You can make your own cactus soil by mixing two parts sand, two parts potting soil, and one part gravel.  The next step is to choose your cacti and get them into the ground.

If you live in an area where temperatures will approach freezing during the winter it is probably best to plant your cacti in a planter so you can bring them inside before it gets too cold out.  You should keep a careful eye on your cactus garden to make sure no weeds or grass, grow around your cacti.  These weeds will not only choke out your cactus, but they will also retain moisture in the soil, moisture that could rot your cacti roots.
